3 Riders will compete to win by one rider going into the herd and cutting out the number called by the judge and driving it through the center shoot. The other riders guard the holes on both sides of the shoot, so cows can't get past them. They also help hold back trash cows for the rider cutting the cows out of the herd and running them through the center shoot.
There's a 90 second clock and you must send one qualified cow through to qualify for call back. The team that gets the most cows in combined run wins. Last rider through the shoot must raise their hand when team wants to call time.

NOVICE STOCKYARD SORTING RULES & INSTRUCTIONS
SIGN UP
Sign up your teams of 3. Any combo-1's & 2's or all 1's or all 2's. 6 ride limit. Once you sign up give the form to us along with your team's money. Make a copy for yourself. We will be starting with team #1 - so choose wisely.
GAME INSTRUCTIONS
This game is very simple. We are going to show you how to play this like the Open and Pro-am teams play except every novice team will qualify for a free callback, even if they don't get one cow thru the shoot. In Open and Pro-am, teams must push at least 1 cow thru to qualify for a call back. COWS ARE NUMBERED 1-9.
There will be panels set up at the far end of the arena that provide a "shoot" for you to push cattle thru. All 3 riders enter the arena, just like team penning, and once the first rider triggers the mechanical eye, the clock starts and the judge calls out the cow's #. One rider will enter the herd while the other 2 riders "protect the hole" on either side of the shoot where cattle aren't allowed to go. The rider in the herd will cut the cow out then continue with the next cow and next until it's time to call it quits. We will give a 30 second warning so you can decide if you want to get out of the herd and end your run, or go for more. When you decide you're done, the last rider must enter thru the shoot and raise his hand. If a rider before him raises his hand, the team will be disqualified, so careful! Although there are 9 cows per herd, don't be discouraged if you only get 1 or 2 in. You'll be timed (90 secs) and have a second go once we finish the first go. The winner will be the team that gets the most cows in (combined runs). If by chance you get 8 cows in in the first run and none in the second, you'll lose. You must get cattle in in both runs to qualify as a winner. First we count the most cows, then if there's a tie, we look at the best combined time. When your team finishes its run, please settle or change your herd for the next team.
